A pregnancy lasts for about 40 weeks, counting from the first day of the woman’s last menstrual period. The average length of pregnancy is 38 weeks. About 10% of pregnancies last more than 42 weeks.

After 8 weeks, the baby is called a fetus. The rest of the pregnancy is spent growing and developing inside the mother’s womb.

The final few weeks of pregnancy are spent preparing for birth. The baby continues to gain weight and mature, and the mother’s body starts to prepare for labor. At around week 40, labor begins and the baby is born!
